Dear Parishioners,
The most holy Church of the Lateran, the mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world!” These words, in Latin, greet every pilgrim entering through the front door of the Archbasilica of St. John in the Lateran in Rome and clearly proclaim the Lateran’s significance in Christianity. We call the Lateran the mother of every church edifice because it was the first legalized Christian Church in history. It is the head, because Rome is the principal Church of the principal local Church in the world, the Diocese of Rome, the See of St. Peter, the vicar on earth of the Head of the Mystical Body. The Lateran, not St. Peter’s, is the Pope’s Cathedral, where his cathedra, the chair symbolic of his teaching authority, rests. The Lateran, not the Vatican, is where the Popes resided for the first millennium of legalized Christianity (324-1308). This is the reason why on November 9 every year not just the Diocese of Rome but the whole Roman Catholic Church celebrate the feast of the dedication of their Head and Mother. “With this feast,” Pope Francis said a few years ago in an Angelus meditation, “we profess, in the unity of the faith, the bond of communion that all the local Churches, spread throughout the earth, has with the Church of Rome and with its Bishop, the successor to Peter.” St. John Lateran is, we can loosely say, the Cathedral of the world.
The history of the Lateran symbolizes, in many ways, the history of the Church for which she is its liturgical mother and head. The Lateran Archbasilica is a fitting symbol for the Church that as theologians say is semper reform Anda or always in need of reform. Over the centuries, the Lateran has been multiply pillaged by vandals, three times decimated by fire, toppled by an earthquake, and neglected by the Popes and faithful sometimes for decades. After every deformation, however, the Lateran rose again, continuing to proclaim to the city and the world the Church’s faith, through the words of the popes and five ecumenical councils held there, and through the language of its art and architecture. It’s therefore a sign of hope for the Church in every age and place.

Father George MSFS

Weekly proclamation based on hope for the Jubilee Year of Hope
Jubilee Year of Hope 2025
Jesus is Our Hope (1 Timothy 1:1)
During the month of November we especially remember the people in our lives who have died. We are invited to pray for them and have Masses offered at the parish, if further purification is needed, as is the case for every person, before they are able to enjoy the vision of God. During this Jubilee Year of Hope, let us ask Jesus to help us place all our hope in Him,
to trust that He is “the way, the truth, and the life”, whose death on the cross and resurrection save us from death. A verse from the hymn “Lord Jesus, Think on Me” expresses this thought well: For them, we humbly pray:
Perfect them in Your love!
O may we share eternal day
With them in heaven above!
ST. FAUSTINA STUDY GROUP: the next session will be held on Thursday, November 13th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the School. Marge will show a video on the life of St. Faustina. NOTE: we are switching to an afternoon time because of the end of daylight savings time.
Please Donate to Jamaica Relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa
The full extent of Hurricane Melissa’s destruction is becoming clear after the powerful storm swept across Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. In Jamaica, which suffered the greatest impact, the Catholic Church, through Caritas Antilles and local dioceses, is leading emergency response coordination with Catholic Relief Services. More than 2,000 kits—including water, sanitation, hygiene supplies and essential items—were prepositioned by CRS in St. Lucia for a crisis just like this. Trained volunteers are now deployed in shelters and communities, ensuring timely and ethical humanitarian assistance. Your generosity is needed to support these efforts. You may also donate by phone: 1.877.HELP.CRS or donate by check: Catholic Relief Services, Hurricane Melissa P.O. Box 5278, Tipton, IA 52772 0517. Catholic Relief Services is a reputable Catholic organization dedicated to help people affected by disasters. There is no reason to worry about being “scammed” if you make a donation.

Jubilee Year
Making a Pilgrimage
There is a long tradition of making pilgrimages in the Catholic Church. This practice has been encouraged by Pope Francis during the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope. The Pope explains that a pilgrimage is a "fundamental element of every jubilee year." He also granted an indulgence to the faithful who complete pilgrimages in this
Holy Year.
